Aster laevis (Smooth Blue Aster)
Aster laevis, commonly known as Smooth Blue Aster, is just that: smooth to the touch. Unlike many asters that have hairy stems and leaves, Aster laevis, does not. Not only are the leaves hairless, but their color is a lovely blue/green. This handsome native wildflower grows from two to three feet tall and in fall, violet blue flowers appear in terminal clusters, each flower about one inch across. I have grown Aster laevis in my own garden for a number of years and wouldn't be without it. For some reason, it isn't often seen in cultivated gardens, but it should be. Dappled shade/full shade in Zones 4-8. Quarts.
