Amsonia tabernaemontana (Eastern Blue Star/Blue Dog Bane)
Amsonia, also known as Blue Star, is a lovely native American wildflower that is as at home in the woodland garden as it is in the perennial border. Blue Star (in the foreground of the photo at left) grows from two to three feet with willowy green leaves and the palest of blue, star-shaped flowers in early spring. Blue Star is slow-growing, but once it takes off, it gets larger and more beautiful each year and sticks around for a long time. Blue Star is, without a doubt, one of the "stars" in the plant kingdom and will be in your garden, too. Sun/partial shade and well-drained soil in Zones 3-9. Quarts.
